California Mountain Biking

Are California Mountain Bikers Spoiled?

California mountain biking rocks!  So yes, Cali mountain bikers are spoiled.   After all, this is where it all began.  Be proud of your rich mountain biking heritage, and enjoy the disproportionate amount of sunshine.

Most people don't know that mountain biking is a very young sport.  It has taken the world by storm as half of all bicycle sales are mountain bikes.  Before the 70's mountain biking didn't exist.

History of Mountain Biking

The story of mountain biking began in California's Marin county, although some would argue otherwise.

In 1973 a group of gutsy, inventive, and fearlessly competitive guys began racing modified bikes (clunkers from the 1930's) down a fire road called the Repack course.  The Repack course is pictured below, located just west of Fairfax, CA.

The gang soon got tired of pushing their bikes uphill, so they continued to make modifications to their bikes, allowing them to ride uphill as well. The first organized downhill race was held in October of 1976, and since then mountain biking has become one of the world's fasting growing sports.
